Biography

Born 1929

Background

1950 Graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Diploma in Western  Painting), Singapore.

1958 NDD- Diploma in Design (Painting), Chelsea School of Art, Uk

1964 Principal and Senior Art Lecturer, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore

1980 Awarded the Public Service , during the National Awards.

Lim Yew Kuan was awarded the Public Service Star from the Republic of Singapore Government in 1980. He was honoured by being appointed sculptor for the official bust of President of Singapore, Inche Yusof Bin Ishak in 1966 and President Dr Benjamin Sheares in 1999. Lim Yew Kuan works are in the permanent collection of the Singapore Art Museum and numerous local and overseas art collections. His works have been exhibited in Southeast Asia, Paris, Japan, Taiwan and China.

1994 Exhibited in “Six Artists Exhibition”, the Paragon

1996 Exhibited in “Nine Artists in Bali”, Agung Rai Museum of Art, Bali, Indonesia.

1997 Sculpted and presented the bust of the first President of Singapore, Mr. Yusof bin Ishak, to Yusof Ishak Secondary School.

1998 Exhibited in “History through Prints: Woodblock Prints in Singapore”, Nationakl Museum of Singapore.

Sculpted and presented the bronze bust of Mr. Lim Hak Tai, Founding Principle, to the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts to commemorate its 60th anniversary.

1999 Commissioned by the Government of Singapore to sculpt the bust of Dr. Benjamin Sheares, the second President of Singapore.

2002 Exhibited and lectured in “ Singapore in Prints: 1950-1960”, “A Historical Narrative through Woodblock Prints”, at the National University of Singapore.

Exhibited in Expositiondes oeuvres de M. Lim Yew Kuan “Hommage a Paris”, Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris, France.

2002/2003 Exhibited and lectured in Nanyang 1950-1965: ‘Passage to Singaporean Art”, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan. (Part of ASEAN)-Japan Exchange Year 2003).

2004 Exhibited in “City Inspirations”, Cape of Good Hope Gallery, MICA Building.

Exhibited in “Soaring to New Frontier”, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

2005 Exhibited and lectured in “A Heroic Decade: Singapore Art 1955-1965” Singapore Art Museum. Exhibited was held in conjunction with Singapore’s celebration of  40 years of independence.

Exhibited in ”Time Phase Print – 25th Anniversary of Printmaking Society”, Jendela (Visual Arts Space), Esplanade.

2006 Exhibited in “Imprints of the Past : Remembering the 1966 Woodcut Exhibition”, National library of Singapore.

2007 Exhibited in “ART Singapore” The Contemporary Asian Art Fair, Suntec City.

2009 Sculpted and presented the life-size bronze sculpture of Lim Hak Tai, Founding Principle, to Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Mr. Lim Hak Tai’s works were exhibited in Quintessential Nanyang” in conjunction with the unveiling of sculpture to celebrate the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts 70th anniversary.

2010 Exhibition opening of “Lim Yew Kuan Retrospective Exhibition”.

2011 Exhibit in “Crossing Visions” – Singapore and Xiamen: Lim Hak Tai and Lim Yew Kuan Art Exhibition’, Xiamen Art Museum, China.

A life-size bronze stature of Mr. Lim Hak Tai, Founding Principal of the Nanyang

Academy of Fine Arts, Co-founder of the Xiamen Academy of Fine Arts, will be presented to Xiamen Art Museum to celebrate our shared art heritage. It will also serve to celebrate Mr. Lim Hak Tai’s return to Xiamen, his fist home.
