Lim Yew Kuan was awarded the Public Service Star from the Republic of Singapore Government in 1980. He was honoured by being appointed sculptor for the official bust of President of Singapore, Inche Yusof Bin Ishak in 1966 and President Dr Benjamin Sheares in 1999. Lim Yew Kuan works are in the permanent collection of the Singapore Art Museum and numerous local and overseas art collections. His works have been exhibited in Southeast Asia, Paris, Japan, Taiwan and China.

1906 Chen Wen-Hsi 陈文希 was born on September 9, in Baigong, Guangdong Province China.

He entered Chen Li Primary School very early, and St. Joseph Middle School.

1928 At the end of Secondary school, he decided to devote himself to Art.

He joined for one year the Shanghai College of Art, then the Xinhua College of Art under Pan Tianshou.

1929 First exhibition in Snatow then Shanghai (1931 – 1933), Guangzhou (1932 – 1936).

1937 He received praise of Xu Beihong at the 2nd National Art Exhibition, Nanjing.

In the same year, he was elected as one of the ten greatest Chinese Contemporary Artists by an English Art magazine.

1948 He moved to Singapore and began teaching painting at the Chinese Secondary School and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nanyang.

He was one of the four artists and educators, pioneers of Singapore, with his friends :

Chen Chong Swee, Liu Kang, Cheong Soo Pieng .

During the holidays, he travelled to South East Asia in search of inspiration.

He participated in exhibitions of the group of the Society of Art of Singapore.

Born 1910-1979
1931-1937 Indochina School of Fine Arts in Hanoi.
1957 The first rector of the newly Hue College of Art.
1939 Work exhibited in Hanoi.
1940 Work exhibited in Japan.
1945 Work exhibited in Saigon.
1950 Work exhibited in Vatican.
1957 Well recognized as one of the teachers and directors of the Fine Art School in Hue.

Tôn Thât Dao was born in Hue, a member of the Royal family. The Indochina School of Fine Arts in the 1930′, where teaching was at its best, and many very diversified talents (Luong Xuan Nhi and Le Yen) among others were brought together to contribute in the building of a harmonious and original synthesis strong enough to give birth to an incredible art school. After graduation, Ton continued his experimentation on silk, wood and Do paper (paper made from the bark of Rhamnoneuron balansae traditionally produced in many villages in Vietnam), using various mediums such as ink and colour, oil and pencil. He is known for his lyrical and romantic paintings. Ton That Dao portrayed here a serene landscape of cruise boat along riverbank on a misty day.

Tôn Thât Dao started teaching in the Khai Dinh Lycée in Hue, where he first lived, as well as in Dong Khanh College. Furthermore, he developed other talents such as cinema storyboarding and in book illustration. Later he would become the teacher of Bao Long, the imperial Prince and son of Bao Dai in 1941. Bao Long always evoked his master with respect such as when he conducted a personal interview in Paris, 1995.

A royal family member, a traditionalist, a teacher, a man from the “South”: all of this was too much for the Vietnamese official historiography after 1975. And hence Tôn Thât Dao does not appear in the different official hagiographies. Socially, like many others – his existence was muffled and erased. He died in 1979 taking with him all his memories of a world well gone leaving a few traces like in this magnificent work where a young lady (certainly about to get married) is getting ready with the help of two others.

Lai Foong Moi was the first Malaysian-born woman artist to study art in Paris and she was influenced by Post-Impressionism. She produced landscapes, genre scenes and sensitive portraits, mostly of women. This portrait study of an elderly Chinese San Sui construction worker is significant because it records a part of this nation’s modern history, namely, the earlier story of Chinese migration and indentured labour. These hardy Hakka women from Guangdong province in Southern China had come here during the Thirties to work in the new construction sites as labourers. They were still a regular sight at our construction sites until the early Sixties. Dressed in their black sam foo blouse and pants and wearing their familiar bright red headgear, which shielded them from the hot tropical sun, they epitomized the spartan toughness of the poorer Chinese women who had come here to eke out a living in order send back money to their families in China.
Lai Foong Moi has immortalised the Sun Sul women in this remarkable portrait painting. One may wonder today what this younger Paris-trained woman painter, who had also come from a poor working class Malaysian Chinese family, had felt as she was painting the wrinkled, older woman. Something of the artist’s emotional feelings do reveal themselves in the way she has depicted her subject matter, emphasising the woman’s hard existence and resilience. Note the stark realism in the treatment of the subject’s face, hands and the feet. The feet are clad in a pair of rubber sandals, that were usually made from cut pieces of discarded rubber tyres. The artist has placed her subject against a landscape. Beside the woman is her old rattan bag containing water bottles and what looks like a small stove. The depiction of the bamboo plants just behind her may have been deliberate. The resilience and strength of bamboo is well known and the bamboo plants may have been used by the artist as a metaphor for highlighting the toughness and perseverance of these now vanished breed of Chinese women.
